چکیده

In recent years, several network support schemes for reliable multicast were proposed. RMAC(Reliable Multicast using Adaptive Caching) provides router-assisted reliable multicast transport. It improves retransmission efficiency by caching transmitted data adaptively to network condition at RMAC routers. Bandwidth utilization is also improved by dropping unnecessary feedbacks and retransmissions at RMAC routers. However, RMAC does not control retransmission flows. Frequent retransmission flows generated by uncontrolled requests from ”Crying Baby” receivers causes congestion, preventing other receivers from keeping their proper throughput. In this paper, we describe a mechanism to control retransmission flows in RMAC. The target of our mechanism is to dissolve congestion by controlling “Crying Baby” receivers’ requests for

Adaptive Error Correction to Support Heterogeneous Multicast Groups

Usage of IP multicast for the distribution of e.g. multimedia data to a set of receivers is increasing. Neither TCP nor UDP are suited for providing a reliable transmission, however, because they lack multicast support or (in the case of UDP) the ability of retransmission. The situation is further complicated by multicast groups that are heterogeneous with respect to error rates and delays expe...

NAK-based Flow Control Scheme for Reliable Multicast Communications

In reliable multicast communications, lost information due to packet loss should be re-multicasted. NAK-based retransmission scheme is said to be effective for scalable reliable multicast communications because it can avoid implosion of control packet. When the source sends packets faster than receiver’s capacity, packet loss due to buffer overflow occurs constantly at corresponding receivers. ...

Self-organizing Tree Formation Protocol and Adaptive Subcasting for EÆcient Reliable Multicast

We present a self-organizing tree formation protocol, STFP, for one-to-many reliable multicasts. STFP constructs a minimum spanning tree of receivers over the underlying multicast routing tree. Based on the tree built by STFP, we develop eÆcient one-tomany reliable multicast protocols that use unicast and/or subcast for retransmitting lost packets. We also describe two novel adaptive subcasting...

An efficient and fair reliable multicast protocol for 802.11-based wireless LANs

Many applications are inherently multicast in nature. Such applications can benefit tremendously from reliable multicast support at the MAC layer since addressing reliability at the MAC level is much less expensive than handling errors at the upper layers. However, the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer does not support reliable multicast. This void in the MAC layer is a limiting factor in the efficacy of m...

Formally modeling, analyzing, and designing network protocols: a case study on retransmission-based reliable multicast protocols

In this thesis, we conduct an extensive case study on formally modeling, analyzing, and designing retransmission-based reliable multicast protocols. We first present an abstract model of the communication service that several reliable multicast protocols [12, 13, 32–34] strive to provide. This model precisely specifies i) what it means to be a member of the reliable multicast group, ii) which p...
